"You've Got a Friend" by James Taylor
Lyrics
Song
One of the first main points that I would like to bring up this song is just the entire soothing melody of it. This fact will be used later in my explanation. One of the first tools that I see used in this song is euphony. The lyrics just seem to flow well and along with the music seems very soothing. The entire song, in my opinion, is spoken through the eyes of James Taylor himself (I will explain why later). Another thing that is crucial into understanding this poem is that there is a very interesting structure to it. There are multiple examples of enjambment that specifically call on words that are important to his point. The first and most obvious one is when he excludes the phrase "You've got a friend". The phrase is the main point of the entire song and it is important that he brings more importance to this.
This brings me to the entire point and purpose of the song. James Taylor has already stated that he performed this song because it just felt right to him. However, looking deeper into the lyrics gives a different picture. It shows a James Taylor that is talking a close friend. He is reassuring his friend that he will always be there not matter what time it is or what place. This point is further driven by the fact that the tune that follows along the lyrics is slow and soothing.

I love this song, and this is a great analysis. Talking to a friend is an interesting interpretation, but I agree that the euphony adds to the soothing tone of the song.
