Week 4 Reading Response

I have another interesting topic for today. So just a fair warning, this one is going to get very technical because of the level of technology that I am going to explain. So far in The Last World War, two alien races are dueling it out with futuristic technology. One of these marvelous features of engineering is the shock wave guns that one of the alien races use.

The basic idea is actually very simple. A wave is something that oscillates parallel to the direction of the transfer of energy that is happening. The premise of these weapons is to make a wave so strong, that is tears other things into tiny bits in pieces because of the amount of strength in the wave. And actually, creating waves this strong isn't very hard. Explosive shock waves are the very reasons why explosions are used by various military groups. The problem is shooting the wave in a precise direction, and harnessing that much power in a small form factor. Those are the two details that the author chooses to leave out, and this is because scientists still haven't figured out how to solve these problems.

    This sounds like an interesting topic that more research could be conducted on. I might have to consider read this book after all of your response too! Keep it up!

My Own Prompt

Prompt: Who was/is the most formative in your life. Why? The most formative person in my life was my Papa. Papa is what I call my grandfather. He taught me two main lessons. The first one was about work. Every summer I would go to the farm and work with Papa. We would work really, really hard. He always told me that it would all pay off in the future. He was correct because every year we would sell the cattle that we had taken care of. The second lesson is a little more ridiculous. He would always say, "if you cant go first class, then don't go." This means that one should strive for the very best, or one should not strive at all. He took this seriously in all aspects of life. He got the very best farming equipment, the very best technology, and the very best fountain pens(his hobby at the time) that he could acquire. He could do this because he worked so hard. So I guess that the first lesson that he taught me feeds into the second one.

Purple Hibiscus Response

One of the most interesting things to me in Purple Hibiscus is the fact that they are living in a very unstable Nigeria. I have previously learned about Nigeria before, but my knowledge is still very basic and limited in the fact that I never really knew much about the politics of Nigeria until just recently. In Purple Hibiscus , we see that the recent military coup is extremely oppressive in nature. We see people being jailed for criticizing the government (like Ade) and we see people being killed for nonviolent crimes such as drug dealing. I began to research so that I could understand just what coup occurred in the time frame of this book. I thought that if I could understand the government of Nigeria more, then I could better understand what exactly is happening to the people of Nigeria. One of the first things that came up whenever I searched about this topic was oil. Oil was the essential driver of these military coups. Each coup was driven by the greed for money and power. ...
